With each of the 8 locks being longer than 2 football fields and weighing more than 30,000 tons, the Welland Canal was constructed to link Lake Erie with Lake Ontario. The Canal offers ships a safe detour around Niagara falls. Hours can be spent watching ships from distant countries slowly raising and lowing their way through the locks.
